Autism (ASD) is a condition characterized by difficulties in communication, social skills, and behavior. It can lead to difficulty in making friends or maintaining relationships. Autistic individuals may exhibit unique behaviors, making learning and engaging in new activities more challenging without support. It is often considered neurodivergent, a difference rather than a disability. It is important to respect the perspective of the person with this condition and their families regarding their care needs. It is present throughout a person’s lifetime and may be caused by genetic differences, brain development, functional differences, or environmental exposure.
II. Signs and symptoms:
Autism, often present in young children, can be subtle and not immediately noticeable until adulthood. Symptoms vary based on age and gender, and early intervention is crucial for autistic individuals’ success.
Autism in the US: Rates of autism in the US have been rising, to about 1 in 36 children being identified with autism spectrum disorder in 2020, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Kennedy suggested Thursday that newer numbers may show “they’re going up again,” to about 1 in 31. In 2000, the rate was 1 in 150.
Researchers who study autism say that rates are on the rise for a few reasons, including increased awareness, broader definitions, improved screening tools and processes, and earlier detection. Its cause isn’t fully understood, but factors including genetics, advanced parental age, prenatal exposure to air pollution or certain pesticides, and other environmental influences are thought to play a role.

Autism spectrum disorder involves specialized communication, social skills, and behavioral and emotional differences, necessitating support from speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to help individuals and their families.
- Communication Challenges:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects communication and interaction in children. These children often feel self-absorbed and have limited communication skills. They struggle with language skills, understanding others’ words, and nonverbal communication, such as hand gestures, eye contact, and facial expressions. The ability of children with ASD depends on their intellectual and social development, with some having limited speaking skills and others having rich vocabularies.
Some patterns of language use and behaviors in children with ASD include repetitive or rigid language, narrow interests, exceptional abilities, uneven language development, and poor nonverbal communication skills. Repetitive or inflexible language can lead to echolalia, where the child repeatedly repeats words they have heard, while others may have musical talents or advanced abilities in specific areas. Uneven language development can result in children not understanding their speech or responding to others’ speech, leading to misconceptions about hearing problems.
In summary, children with ASD face communication challenges, including repetitive language, limited interests, uneven language development, and poor nonverbal communication skills. These challenges can lead to frustration and inappropriate behaviors, making it crucial for their parents and carers to support and understand their child’s communication needs.

Autistic individuals may struggle with social skills, such as
Making eye contact,
Sharing attention,
Participating in play,
Responding to invitations,
Understanding others’ feelings,
Taking turns
Creating and maintaining friends,
despite appearing less interested or interested in others.
- Behavioral Challenges:
Autistic individuals may exhibit repetitive behaviors, difficulty transitioning between activities, emotional distress, a preference for specific sounds, smells, or textures, and a limited preference for certain foods or objects.

SLPs assist autistic individuals in expressing their preferences and advocating for themselves by discussing autism and teaching others about incorporating autistic individuals into activities.
